I take as much opportunity to travel around as possible. My tastes tend to have kept me pretty much to the Old World, particularly Europe. I think I just find the relevance of the heritage to me more appealing than the more alien heritage of more exotic places. I'm not yet bored with Europe, and the Middle East (where our culture all began) fascinates me. The colder places in the north don't appeal too much; I like the sun, and our British rain is something to run from if possible! Package holidays tempt me less and less recently, as you get so much more out of things by getting away from the pre-packaged porta-England of the hotel. Maybe I'll change as I get older, and I might start to want holidays to use for doing nothing in. Not yet though.
Below are a number of links to countries that I have visited, where you will find galleries and information about cities and regions for anyone interested. I'm not a travel writer by any means, and I am not claiming to be particularly widely travelled. These pages are meant to whet the traveller's appetite for the destination, providing perhaps more by way of photography than easily found in popular travel books. The galleries open in new windows as they may take some time to download. Please bear with this.
Plans for the near(ish) future include traversing the Caminho de Santiago from Le Puy-en-Velay in France to Santiago de Compostela in Spain by a mixture of foot and public transport, as well as more extensive travel in the Balkans. I would also particularly like to tackle the following:
A trip from Greece through Turkey to the Caucuses countries (Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan)
A trip to China, particularly the Yangtzhe river
And individually: Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Israel (again), Macchu Picchu and Peru, the Nile valley, Morocco (more extensively), Tunisia, Ethiopia, Mali, climbing up Mount Kenya.
